How A Woman Got an Oxford Scholarship After Many Failures
Writer: Exponect.com Team
Well in my viewpoint, Life is a journey in which
circumstances change, challenges appear, and difficult times test your patience
and determination. As science students know that a diamond does not become
precious overnight. Similarly, a human being does become successful in a single
day. It takes time, long struggle, patience, and perseverance to become truly
valuable.
This is a real successful story of a woman who faced
many challenges and difficulties while pursuing her dream of higher education.
She experienced hardships in her life, faced setbacks but she did not give up.
Eventually, her determination and continued efforts brought fruit for her in
the form of Oxford university scholarship where she began working as a Research
in medical science.
This story is not only about women’s empowerment. It
is also a message for all people in the world who want to achieve success in
life through education.
This successful and motivational story is about Phuong
Bich Tran, a Research Fellow in Health Economics at the University of Oxford, reflects
the importance of persistence and determination in building a meaningful
career. Her journey from Vietnam, her home country, to research institutions
and collaborations across Sweden, Zambia, France, Belgium, and the United
Kingdom represents more than academic achievement. It is a story of continuous
learning, international experience, research, and a commitment to making a
difference in healthcare.
For anyone who has experienced rejection or feels that
their background may limit their opportunities, her journey offers an important
message: a difficult beginning does not have to determine the final
destination.
Rejection Does Not Mean the End
Many people see the final achievement but do not see
the struggle behind it.
When an individual applies for scholarships, academic
programs, research opportunities, or professional positions, rejection can feel
like a judgment of their ability. In reality, rejection can be part of the
process of finding the right opportunity.
The important question is not always, “Why did I
fail?”
A more productive question can be:
“What can I learn from this experience, and what can I
do differently next time?”
This mindset transforms failure from a final
destination into a learning experience.
Phuong's international academic and research journey
illustrates the value of continuing to learn, adapt, and move forward despite
challenges.
From Vietnam to an International Research Career
Phuong's journey began in Vietnam and developed
through research experiences in several countries, including Sweden, Zambia,
France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.
Each environment offered opportunities to encounter
different healthcare systems, cultures, research practices, and perspectives.
Rather than seeing international experience simply as
a list of countries on a CV, her career can be understood as a continuous
learning journey. Each experience contributed to a broader understanding of
health and healthcare.
This kind of exposure can help a researcher look at
healthcare challenges from multiple perspectives rather than relying on a
single way of thinking.
It also demonstrates an important lesson for young
professionals:
Sometimes, leaving your comfort zone is one of the
most powerful ways to expand your knowledge and potential.
Turning Challenges into Motivation
A major difference between people who give up and
those who continue moving forward is often their response to setbacks.
Failure can create two choices.
One is to allow disappointment to reduce confidence
and motivation.
The other is to treat the experience as feedback and
continue improving.
The second approach requires resilience.
Every unsuccessful application, difficult project,
critical review, or unexpected obstacle can provide an opportunity to learn
something new. The process may be uncomfortable, but it can gradually develop
patience, adaptability, and determination.
This is why failure should not always be viewed as the
opposite of success.
Sometimes, failure is part of the education required
to achieve success.
Research with a Purpose: To Serve other Human Beings
Phuong's current work in Health Economics demonstrates
how academic research can be connected to real-world healthcare decisions.
As a Research Fellow on the MEMVIE3 project, she works
on research examining the cost-effectiveness of vaccination programs for
infectious diseases in England, including COVID-19 and pneumococcal disease.
Her responsibilities include identifying knowledge
gaps, reviewing economic literature, analyzing datasets, and collaborating with
mathematical modelers and policymakers in the development of decision-analytic
models.
Behind these technical responsibilities lies a broader
purpose: helping generate evidence that can contribute to better healthcare decisions.
This provides an important lesson for aspiring
researchers.
Education and research become more meaningful when
knowledge is used to address problems that affect people's lives.
The Power of Asking Yourself Questions
Whenever you start your work first of all ask yourself
What is purpose of my work?
One of the most powerful tools in research is the
ability to ask meaningful questions. Developing the habit of asking yourself questions is
incredibly powerful in to solve problems in life specially in any domain of life.
Research begins when someone recognizes that something
is unknown, uncertain, or could be understood better.
As I explained in the mentioned above text pertaining
to the Phuong's work that involves identifying knowledge gaps and examining
existing evidence. This demonstrates that research is not simply about
collecting information. It is also about questioning what we already know and
identifying what still needs to be understood.
By developing the habit of self-questioning,
researchers and scientists uncover new research gaps.
The power of a good question cannot be underestimated.
A single question can lead to a research project, a
new model, a policy discussion, or evidence that ultimately contributes to
better decisions.
Breaking Barriers for Women in Science
Phuong's story also challenges the misconception that
scientific research and healthcare leadership are fields dominated only by men.
Women can contribute to medical research, health
economics, public health, policy development, and scientific innovation at the
highest professional levels.
Her career demonstrates that a woman can develop specialized
expertise, conduct research, collaborate internationally, contribute to
policy-related work, and take leadership roles within the scientific community.
Her experience therefore carries a message that
extends beyond her own career:
Talent has no gender, and intellectual potential has
no geographical boundary.
A Commitment to Equality in Science
Another inspiring aspect of Phuong's professional
journey is her commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in science.
She is passionate about promoting equal opportunities
in research and advocating for equal partnerships between the Global North and
Global South.
This reflects an understanding that scientific
progress becomes stronger when different voices and perspectives are included.
Research should not simply be about who has the
greatest resources. It should also be about creating opportunities for
researchers from different backgrounds to contribute their knowledge and
experience.
Her commitment provides a valuable lesson:
Success becomes more meaningful when it helps create
opportunities for others.
From Researcher to Global Health Voice in Oxford
Phuong was selected as an Emerging Voice for Global
Health in 2022 and currently serves as a committee member of the Equality,
Diversity & Inclusion Promotion and Monitoring Committee of the
International Health Economics Association.
She is also a co-organizer of the Global Health
Storytelling Collective with colleagues from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public
Health.
These activities show that professional influence can
extend beyond an individual's own research.
A researcher can contribute through publications and
projects, but can also influence their field by supporting inclusion,
encouraging collaboration, sharing experiences, and creating platforms for
other voices.
Lessons We Can Learn from Her Phuong's Journey
Phuong's career offers several lessons that can be
valuable for students, researchers, and professionals.
1. Do Not Let Rejection Define You
A rejection is an outcome, not an identity.
One unsuccessful opportunity does not determine your
intelligence, potential, or future.
2. Keep Learning
Every new environment can teach you something.
Different countries, institutions, cultures, and
colleagues can expand your understanding and strengthen your professional
perspective.
3. Turn Setbacks into Lessons
Instead of allowing failure to stop you, ask what it
can teach you.
Use criticism as feedback, obstacles as learning
experiences, and setbacks as motivation to improve.
4. Build Expertise with Purpose
Developing a specialized field of expertise is
valuable, but using that expertise to solve real life problems gives a
purposeful career to your life with a noble profession.
5. Discover Your Inner Potential
Your current circumstances do not necessarily
determine your future.
Where you begin is not always where you will finish.
6. Use Success to Help Others
True professional success is not only about reaching a
prestigious position. It is also about contributing to your community,
supporting others, and making your field more inclusive.
The Real Meaning of Success
When you serve human beings then you feel inner
satisfaction because your work is not behind the digital screen with shallow
life of clicks and views. As a result, your work becomes meaningful for you
that add values in lives of other people in the world.
Success should not be measured only by face and the
name of an institution, a job title, or an academic achievement. In field of
education and research success means serving humanity.
Many people face rejections in their life but I must
say that they should not think that one closed door means that no door will
open for you for success.
You should focus on learning. You should feel that you
are Improving yourself every day.
Ask yourself different questions about your Goal and
your work and Keep moving forward towards your destination.
Sometimes, your journey may take longer time to reach the
destination, and it is not the straight path that you originally imagined for
yourself.
You should learn from your failures rather than sit
down thinking what will happen next.
Exponect Insights: Failure Is the Foundation of
Success
Are you ready to use your human potential to create
real value for others and make a meaningful impact on the world?
If yes, keep your eyes on your goal rather than
measuring yourself against competitors or focusing only on the final victories
of successful people. Instead, look deeper into their journeys—especially the
setbacks, rejections, and failures they had to endure along the way.
I was reading a book about the story of Amir Timur. He
was sitting in a dark cave after a devastating defeat, feeling completely
broken. But then he noticed a very small ant trying to climb the wall while
carrying a grain. It fell again and again, but continued trying. Finally, after
many attempts, it succeeded on its 70th attempt.
He realized that failure is not the end; it is a
reason to get up, overcome a pessimistic mindset, and continue striving for
victory in life. Failures are an essential part of the journey toward success.
Timur then gathered his courage, reorganized his
forces, and moved forward with renewed determination. Ultimately, he succeeded
and went on to build a vast empire.
Every setback you face carries a valuable lesson,
strengthens your resolve, and sharpens your path forward. A meaningful life is
never built without struggle; what truly matters is how you respond when things
fall apart.
You do not need to accomplish everything overnight.
Focus on consistent, "atomic steps" towards to accomplish your
mission.
Your failures do not define your abilities—rather,
your determination to rise again, learn, and move forward during tough times is
your true identity. Just like the ant climbing a wall that I mentioned above,
take a lesson from failure and consider every obstacle a new turn—do not think
that the paths are closed. Instead, move forward with vision-oriented
strategy, and the paths will be opened for you. Your duty is to struggle and
work hard. You should keep your every small step moving toward your
destination.
